Laura Ingraham's Talking Points Memo: Obama wants you to give up your SUV?

Laura Ingraham again subbed for Bill O'Reilly on Wednesday night, but this time, she was actually allowed to deliver a Talking Points Memo.

I guess this was to prove that Talking Points and Bill O'Reilly are not one and the same.  Even if that is the case, Laura went so far over the top and over the edge of the cliff that she started the show as a laughing stock!  Obama said that the US cannot expect the world to look at them driving their gas-guzzling SUVs and sticking two fingers up to the rest of the world, and like it.  Laura accused him of wanting the US to give up it's sovereignty and hand over its liberties.  She also said that he wanted the US to ask permission of the European Union before they did anything that might be considered to be environmentally unfriendly.

She then spouts off about liberals wanting to outlaw the American way of life!  Greed is the American way of life???  I think you've been watching too much Gordon Gecko!

And as if that was enough, she then said that liberal climate change policies are designed to subjugate the American people into a way of life that is decided overseas.  Way to go, combining climate change with xenophobia!!!  That's a link a sane person wouldn't make!

Laura, is it any wonder that you're a D-List conservative talk show host, with opinions that constantly get a failing grade?  I find it hard to believe that Bill O'Reilly would have made this Talking Point, even though he's said some ridiculous things in the past.  Climate change policies are about ensuring this world's survival for future generations, about keeping it liveable for humans.  Your idea of what climate change is, is about as far away from anything factual, as Pluto is from the Sun!  You desperately need a re-education in the subject, Laura, before you make comments like that one again.

O'Reilly vs Olbermann. The feud heats up

Okay, so this feud between Bill O'Reilly and Keith Olbermann has now exploded all over the internet. Both TV Newser and Inside Cable News are all over this story, and especially the article written by Howard Kurtz in the Washington PostNewsbusters has the story as well, Murdoch's US newspaper, The New York Post has also weighed in and not surprisingly, Olbermann Watch has spun the story so hard, that they think they're about to acheive orbit!

Unfortunately, none of them have hit the target!  Most of them get close, but like a bad marksman, they cannot hit the bullseye!   They haven't realised what has really been going on.  Allow the TruthSeeker to explain.

Bill O'Reilly has made a career at Fox News Channel out of presenting himself as part of some no-spin zone.  In reality, he's spinning the items in his show to favour right wing thinking, not necessarily the Republicans, but right wing thinking in general.

Like most people who have a conservative/right wing mindset, Bill O'Reilly is incapable of admitting he ever makes a mistake.  It is part of the conservative/right wing mindset to blame someone else for their error, even when it is their fault exclusively, they will blame someone else, just because they refuse to ever blame themselves.

You will occasionally see or hear an apology from some conservatives for some of the really dumb things they have done, but not every time, and in all the times I have watched Bill O'Reilly's programme, I don't think I've ever seen him issue an apology on his show.

Keith Olbermann on the other hand, when he has made a mistake on air, has apologised on air.  In fact, he's even awarded himself some bronze medals in his "Worst Person In The World" segment for doing so.  The Bill O'Reilly equivalent would be to see Bill call himself a pinhead in his "Pinheads and Patriots" segment, for something like the "Malmedy" incident when he got the details mixed up twice!  But there was no apology then, just an attempt at a get out of jail free card!  And Bill O'Reilly has never called himself a pinhead.

Now, I said most of them got close, but kept missing the reality.  Here's why.

The New York Post rightly pointed out that...

"...Olbermann walked out of MSNBC years ago in a huff after also blowing up at ESPN, so TV insiders are curious if this recent behavior is a sign that history will repeat itself."

But, they also say that...

"...Olbermann recently encouraged management to oust the cable channel's lone conservative, Tucker Carlson, and it's also no secret among producers that Olbermann refuses to introduce Dan Abrams' show, which follows his own."

Those statements cannot be backed up by any independent source.  Also, please note, that the New York Post belongs to the same News Corporation that Fox News Channel belongs to, so if there was a definite dirty tricks campaign eminating from Fox, the New York Post would be an obvious outlet.

Now to Inside Cable News, which is one of my favourite blogs, and Spud, who runs that has a lot of respect from me, for going against the corporate spin that eminates out from the corporate news operations in New York and DC.  But this time, he's missed the mark.  His commentary on the Washington Post story began thusly:

"...The problem for NBC is that Bill O’Reilly has become as adept and skilled at distorting and misrepresenting NBC and GE as Keith Olbermann is at distorting and misrepresenting O’Reilly and Fox. It was all fine and dandy for NBC when it was just O’Reilly and anything Murdoch getting beat up. But now that it’s a two way street, NBC is whining."

This sounds like something out of an O'Reilly Talking Points Memo, or something Fox News' anti-Keith Olbermann specialist John Gibson might come up with.   Spud fails to mention that Bill O'Reilly has always been adept and skilled at distorting and misrepresenting people, organisations and companies he didn't like.  But from what I have seen of Countdown with Keith Olbermann, Keith hasn't misrepresented anything Bill O'Reilly has said.  In fact, he's been very specific with quotes from the mouth of Bill O'Reilly himself.  Bill O riles against what he sees as "hate speech from the left", but rarely ever touches on the mass of right wing hate speech that comes out from people like Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh, Michael Savage and many other right wing talk show hosts and columnists continue to spout on an almost daily basis.

And by the way, Keith Olbermann is the only so-called "left wing loon" that Bill O'Reilly never has mentioned by name, on air.  Not once.  Yet he's happy to name the likes of Rosie O'Donnell, Al Franken and many others.  Instead of directly challenging his opponent, he shoots all around him, at every other target possible closely associated with Keith Olbermann, hoping that one of those damages Olbermann too, but as before, like a bad marksman, he keeps missing the target.  He needs to refocus on dealing with Keith more directly, then he'll look like less of a coward.

Basically, Bill O'Reilly can stop this feud immediately, by stopping lying to his viewers.  He can stop the distorting, the misrepresenting, and start dealing in facts and truth, not lies and spin.  His so-called "No Spin Zone" is spinning so fast, the centrifugal force inside it must be close to fatal levels!!!

But as I pointed out earlier, those of a right wing mindset, will never admit they've made a mistake, so Bill O'Reilly and his so called "No Spin Zone" will end up spinning so fast that it will end up destroying The O'Reilly Factor and Fox News with it.

Bill O'Reilly's Talking Points Memo: Obama vs Bush/McCain over talking to Iran.

Bill O'Reilly has a habit of saying things in a way that if you were to read it yourself, you'd think it sounded neutral, but Bill O has a way of making it sound anything but.  In this case, it's Obama vs Bush & McCain over the issue of negotiating with Iran.

Now, for once, I have to give Bill O some credit for doing a very analytical (mostly) memo.  But as usual, Billy's view is pretty much clearly defined even if he doesn't state it explicitly.

There are two key parts of the memo, which highlight Bill's right-wing sensibilities.  The first is sneakily located just after Bill has played clips from both President Bush and the Obama camp.

"...Now this skirmish is important for all of us. The next president will have to fight Islamic fascism, but the battle plan has to be smart..."

This is a Republican talking point all over.  Unfortunately, the Republican strategy of not negotiating with Iran has done absolutely no good.  And comparing negotiating with Iran to the appeasement of the Nazis that was attempted in the run up to the Second World War, which Bush did in his speech in Israel, is not going to aid the poor view that the world holds about America currently and the Bush administration in particular.

The second key part is right at the end of the memo.

"...Now I'm glad President Bush put this on the table, because Americans have to seriously think about this ongoing terror war, which includes Iran.

Lately, gas prices and health care have somewhat obscured the danger we all face from overseas. But now, it's back in play."

This is simply trying to scaremonger us into voting for McCain and not Obama.  The tactic has worked before, but it will not work again.  By saying that gas prices and health care has 'obscured' the danger, it makes it sound like they are distractions rather than current, everyday, everyperson issues that the administration should be dealing with, rather than obsessing over Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Put simply. Bill O wants McCain to win, not because he actually likes McCain and his so-called Straight Talk Express, but simply because McCain is the least worst option in Bill's view.  Compare this to the likes of Dick Morris and Ann Coulter, whose referencing of The Manchurian Candidate, a film about a former POW who was brainwashed in SE Asia by the Chinese, running for President, makes them appear to be somewhat traitorous to their own cause, especially considering who the Republican candidate is this election year.  Hmm, maybe for 2008, we should consider renaming it "The McCainian Candidate"!!!

Bill O'Reilly's Talking Points Memo: Racism and Sexism in the Presidential Race?

Bill O'Reilly continues his vengeance against 'race-baiters' and especially continuing to target Dr Boyce Watkins at Syracuse University.  He then follows this up with referencing an op-ed column in the Boston Globe.

I do wish Bill would wake up to reality.  There are racists in America and accusing those who highlight this of being race-baiters, isn't exactly helpful.

Bill O'Reilly's Talking Points Memo: Race baiting part deux!

Why do one story once when you can do the same subject repeatedly and really reinforce your point, even if it is wrong.  It's the old idea of if you repeat something often enough, people will accept it as fact.

He even sends another producer-monkey to do an ambush!

Make no mistake, race-baiters are BillO's "enemy du jour" and he will stop at nothing to make sure you get the idea that race is an issue in this election, even though Barack Obama has done everything possible to minimize it as an issue.

Worst Person In The World: Roger Ailes

Friday night's gold medal winner (the medals aren't real gold, just gold foil covered chocolate!) was the big boss man himself at Fox News, Roger Ailes.  The reason: firing a 24 year old production assistant who happened to say on-air to Republican presidential candidate John McCain, that she'd voted for him and she knew he was going to win.  Compared to some of the much more ringing endorsements that Fox used to put out for St Rudi of 9/11, that seems a little bit hollow.

Special mention goes to the other big dog of Fox News, ratings big dog Bill O'Reilly for the story I mentioned over on TruthSeeker.  No surprise at all that Keith Olbermann called BillO out on that one too.

Bill O'Reilly's Talking Points Memo: Race-baiting in the Presidential Election.

BillO's latest memo on Friday night (he's slipping, he's only done 3 memos this week!) was to those people who he called "race-baiters".  By his definition, these are people who cry "race" at the slightest hint of even a racial overtone.

Calling Washington Post columnist and contributor ot MSNBC's Countdown with Keith Olbermann Eugene Robinson a race-baiter, is really just another way at sniping at Keith Olbermann. Sniping at Keith's bosses at NBC Universal and GE haven't helped matters, so Billy boy tries a new tactic. He goes after those contribute to the show. Make the guest analysts seem lousy or biased and you smear Keith by association, or at least that's the idea.

In point of fact, all the Bellow-full of Bluster is doing is making himself look bad, but of course, he doesn't see it that way. In his eyes, nothing could make him look bad.

Bill O'Reilly's Talking Points Memo: Obama locks up the nomination.

I've said it once or twice, but Bill O'Reilly and I do not see eye to eye on a lot of things. But I do agree with Bill O on much of what he says in his latest Talking Points Memo, Wednesday night on the Factor. Obama, to all intents and purposes, does indeed have the nomination locked up, and deep down, Hillary Clinton knows it.

I also agree with Bill when he says that the Obama vs McCain race will be intense. And indeed, race will be a factor.

As for VP nominations, I think Barack Obama could do a lot worse than having New Mexico governor Bill Richardson, as his running mate. As for McCain, it is likely that either Senator Lindsay Graham or Senator Joseph Lieberman, the so called "Independent Democrat", will be his running mate.

Bill O'Reilly Talking Points Memo: Thursday 1st May 2008

On Thursday night's edition of the Factor, Bill O managed the truly incredible feat of linking the Reverend Jeremiah Wright with former left wing radio talk show host, comedian and writer Al Franken. These links are getting more and more tenuous, even more tenuous than a Radio 4 link!

What I find particularly galling is the way he talks about the hate business being good for Wright and his church, yet conveniently forgets about all the money Fox News and their hatemongers, including BillO and Sean Hannity, make. "Fair and balanced"? I think not.

US Cable News Ratings: Countdown on the rise

Bill O'Reilly use to bragg about how his 11pm airing got a better number than Keith Olbermann's 8pm airing. He might not have that to be able to bragg about for much longer.

On Tuesday, MSNBC's Countdown with Keith Olbermann at 8pm had 874,000 total viewers, 273,000 in the money demo, compared to The O'Reilly Factor at 11pm having 867,000 total viewers, 226,000 in the money demo. This was reported by Inside Cable News who use live numbers only.

TV Newser, who use Live + Same Day numbers reported that Countdown at 8pm had 952,000 total viewers, 316,000 in the money demo. Compare this to the 11pm Factor having 879,000 total viewers, 226,000 in the money demo.

Not that Bill O'Reilly had bad numbers that day. TV Newser reported 2.747 million viewers watched the 8pm airing of the Factor, 471,000 in the money demo, according to Live + SD numbers, whilst Inside Cable News reported that the live numbers for the Factor were 2.71 million total viewers, 459,000 in the money demo.

Now, TV Newser have released the Live + SD numbers for Wednesday, and it makes fascinating reading.

The O'Reilly Factor at 8pm had 2.85 million total viewers and 658,000 in the money demo, some of O'Reilly's best numbers this year. At 11pm, he did very well again, scoring 1.208 million viewers, 401,000 in the money demo.

But again, Countdown at 8pm beats Factor at 11pm, with Countdown's best ever numbers. A massive 1.209 million viewers watched Countdown, 409,000 in the money demo, beating the 11pm Factor by 1,000 total viewers and 8,000 demo viewers. This is an incredible performance, by anybody's standards. More people watched Countdown on MSNBC than watched any individual programme on both CNN and Headline News and also The Big Story on Fox News Channel. Expect John Gibson on The Big Story to do his usual anti-Keith Olbermann hit job tomorrow then!

Now, Inside Cable News has also reported the live numbers, and not surprisingly, with the Live+SD numbers being so close, The Factor at 11pm had more live viewers. 1.186 million total viewers, 391,000 in the money demo, compared to Countdown at 8pm with 1.148 million total viewers, 375,000 in the money demo.

Still, these are record numbers for Countdown, the first time they have scored over a million viewers live, and against top class numbers for O'Reilly too. O'Reilly fans and Olby haters are going to hate me for saying this, but this is fair and square, a great showing for Keith Olbermann, not only against O'Reilly himself, but a great rating show. Whether Olbermann will overtake O'Reilly at some point in the future, well, who knows. If it were to happen, it wouldn't be for a few years yet, but at this point, I wouldn't rule it out.

One for the BillO fans and Olby haters

Crooks and Liars reports that on Tuesday night's Countdown with Keith Olbermann, on his Worst Person In The World, Keith Olbermann awarded the bronze to...

...Keith Olbermann!

Somehow, I can't see Bill O'Reilly ever calling himself a pinhead in his Pinheads and Patriots segment.

The Big Fight on MSNBC's Countdown?

We have a 15-round bruiser of a fight brewing here between the Executive Producer of "Redacted" and Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban and the Heavyweight Champion of Fox News Channel, Bill O'Reilly.

O'Reilly has been very critical of the film Redacted, and Cuban responded, not too badly it has to be said. He was speaking at the Blog World Expo in Las Vegas. It was initially reported by TV Newser, but also reported by The Brad Blog.

Mark Cuban himself is a fellow blogger , and he followed up those comments with a post of his own.

But O'Reilly himself responded with one of his talking points memos.

Now, the story has continued on, and Mark Cuban has challenged Bill O'Reilly to a debate. The venue, would be MSNBC's Countdown with Keith Olbermann! And the moderator, the host himself, Keith Olbermann. The challenge was made via Keith Olbermann himself, on Tuesday night's edition of Countdown, and communicated to Keith via email. On a side note, Cuban also came up with a new word that fits any debate between Bill O'Reilly and any sane person, Billsanity!

Somehow, probably because of Bill O'Reilly's known refusal to even acknowledge Keith Olbermann, usually referring to him as "elements at NBC News", I doubt this debate will ever happen, and I doubt that Bill O'Reilly will even acknowledge the offer. It wouldn't fit his style.

Crooks and Liars has an exclusive video clip of the film.

Another strong factor for O'Reilly

TV Newser has reported the latest Cable News Ratings for Halloween night, and it seems that everybody's favourite right wing ghoul, Bill O'Reilly had a real treat that night. Over 2.9 million viewers tuned into his show in total at 8pm ET. That is an incredibly strong number, one of O'Reilly's best ever ratings.

Hannity and Colmes managed to hold onto just over 2 million of those viewers at 9pm, which again is incredibly good. Overall in Prime Time, Fox News Channel managed to register an impressive 2.125 million viewers, which again is very impressive.

Fox News Channel will never be my first choice for news and information, but unlike some on the left, I will never completely dismiss it out of hand either. Like any news source, especially newspapers, you have to learn what is fact and what is spin and propoganda. Fox News is very much the newspaper of the airwaves, with a distinct agenda and bias, one which can also be found in the New York Post or the Sun in the UK and Ireland. Learn to "read" and "decipher" that agenda, and you can understand what is truly important news and what is just editorialising.

US Cable News Numbers: Tuesday 23rd October 2007

Tuesday's numbers were helped overall by the California Wildfires coverage, and by the premiere of CNN's Planet in Peril documentary.

Congratulations have to go to Keith Olbermann who for the first time ever on MSNBC, managed to score over 1 million viewers, both on Live and Live +SD numbers. But Keith was beaten in third place, legit style, by an early airing for Anderson Cooper 360, who managed over 1.3 million. Anderson Cooper was reporting live from Southern California at the scene of the wildfires.

Bill O'Reilly, pulled out a massive 2.77 million viewers, another spectacular performance for him,the second in relatively quick succession.

In the demo, O'Reilly was FNC's only success on the night, winning the 8pm hour. CNN won the demo for all the other hours. Even looking at CNNs total viewers numbers, they have 1 million viewers or more for every hour from 5pm to midnight, as did Fox News Channel.

Overall, a great night for Cable News. CNN have to be proud of their performance, winning Total Day demo and Prime Time demo, plus the fact tha Planet In Peril scored over 1.5 million total viewers and 532,000 in the key demo. Fox News Channel have to be pleased that they held up their numbers despite some extra tough competition out there, and MSNBC have to be pleased that they gained viewers as well, as well a record viewership for Countdown with Keith Olbermann.

It seems that more viewers came to Cable News that night, and everybody gained.

Useful tips for defending yourself against the Falafel Guy!

On yesterday's MSNBC Countdown with Keith Olbermann, as the number 3 story, was a selection of tips about how do defend yourself against a fatwa from your friend and mine, the awful falafel! Crooks and Liars has the story.

I love this. This is so damned funny. I have taken the tips from this feature and incorporated it into my "Anti-Biased News Defence Strategy". I already have my loofah, so I can challenge Falafel Guy to a duel if needs be!

And yes, I do expect Fox Security or one of Bill O'Reilly's producers on my doorstep sometime soon!!!

Dubious Awards for Dubious News!

I have some awards to hand out to "newsmakers" and organisations, who have the dubious distinction of creating some very dubious news stories.

The Backpedalling Bicycle Award goes to Idaho Senator Larry Craig (Republican) for stating that if he can get the disorderly conduct case overturned in court in Minneapolis, he will NOT resign his Senate seat. Of course, once you've pled guilty, getting that plea overturned is very, very difficult indeed.

The Award for the Most Desperate Attempt at Momentum Scuttling is shared between Newsbusters, the blog of the Media Research Center, and The Mark Levin Show for the desperate attempt at stopping MSNBC's Countdown with Keith Olbermann's current momentum, which resulted in a week of great numbers, including the most total viewers who have ever watched the show, and the first victory ever for Countdown against The O'Reilly Factor in the key 25-54 advertising demographic.

Newsbusters uses the Mark Levin Show site as proof that Keith Olbermann, or as Mark Levin seems to like to call him, Keith Overbite, is a mysoginist. The trouble is that the links on the page, the links that Newsbusters seem to highlight as being proof of his mysoginy, are in fact on the New York Post website, which is owned by the same person who owns Fox News. Yes, you've guessed it, your friend and mine, Rupert Murdoch. And guess what, the stories highlight what is said against him, and are treated as fact, when in actuality, all we really have in those articles, is one person's side of the story. No hard and fast facts here for the Truthseeker to find.

So, possible lies, and nothing offered in the way of proof. Can we believe the stories to be undeniable fact? No, plainly we cannot, because of the lack of proof, and because the New York Post, much like it's broadcast cousin Fox News, has a definite agenda against Keith. It was the New York Post, if you recall, that trivialised the story about the white powder that was sent to Keith Olbermann's home. Keith later set the record straight on his own newscast.

So, why did Newsbusters highlight this? Simple, to try and slow down the momentum that has built up since NBC aired a live edition of Countdown with Keith Olbermann on a Sunday Night not too long ago. Nothing more than that.

Congratulations to our rather dubious award winners!

US Cable News Ratings: Countdown's best figures!

This is a post that I am cross posting on both Viewpoint and EMC MediaBlog. For those of you who read one blog but not the other, a brief intro. Viewpoint is my own personal blog where I cover an eclectic mix of subjects. EMC MediaBlog is a blog I contribute to along with many other Transdiffusion colleagues about the media, predominantly in Britain, but we also cover overseas media as well. So, with the introduction to new readers out the way, it's time to talk about the growing Countdown.

No, this is nothing to do with the Channel 4 game show which started on the same day that the channel did, but a news programme on US cable network MSNBC. Countdown with Keith Olbermann is one of MSNBC's most popular shows, and is in many ways, the ratings flagship of the network. However, it is ususally behind many other shows on both Fox News Channel and CNN.

All that could be changing, because last Sunday (26th August 2007), MSNBC's parent company, NBC, aired a live Sunday version of the show, before a pre-season NFL game. Preliminary ratings indicate the show was watched by around 4.1 million viewers, which is around 6 times the usual audience for the programme on MSNBC (around 600-700 thousand), which for a show that wasn't advertised heavily, except on the political blogosphere,is a pretty decent performance.

Now, the numbers for Wednesday night's cable news ratings have just been released, and they reveal some interesting facts.

In what is seen in advertising circles as a key audience demographic, the 25-54 demographic, Countdown was only 6000 viewers behind their big rival in the 8pm timeslot, The O'Reilly Factor on Fox News Channel (299,000 for Countdown, 305,000 for the Factor). However, the bigger story lies in the total viewer numbers, where Countdown recorded what must be its best performance ever, 974,000 viewers.

This doesn't beat the Factor, in a week where Bill O'Reilly is on holiday, but it did emphatically take second place, behind the Factor's 1.641 million, but well ahead of third place CNN (527,000). Maybe O'Reilly being off this week does help, but I think the greater factor here is the live Sunday edition of Countdown which has definitely brought new viewers, to the show, and in the long run, could bring new viewers to MSNBC. Only time will tell.

On that wednesday, Countdown was watched by more viewers than any of the following programmes on US cable news.

The Big Story with John Gibson (Fox News Channel)
Lou Dobbs Tonight (CNN)
Anderson Cooper 360 (CNN)
Glenn Beck (Headline News)
Nancy Grace (Headline News)

Add to that that it was less than 100,000 viewers behind these programmes...

Lary King Live (CNN - 1,029,000)
On The Record with Greta Van Susteren (Fox News Channel - 1,071,000)

...and you have an idea of just how good a performance it was. Larry King Live was the only programme on CNN to rate higher and nobody on Headlines News could even get glose. In fact, even combining the ratings of any two Headline News shows that day wouldn't help them beat Countdown with Keith Olbermann.

Is this the start of a trend? We'll have to wait and see, but there is definitely signs of an upturn, and expect these numbers to be heavily celebrated by MSNBC.

US Cable News Numbers: Friday 27 July 2007

I only talk about the numbers when there is something interesting to report. Otherwise, if you're particularly interested in finding out, there's always Inside Cable News. But this time, I find it particularly interesting to note that Fox Noise, Faux News, call it what you will, but Fox News did not dominate Friday's Numbers.

Fox won every hour from 6pm to 10pm, but unusually lost the 11pm hour, to MSNBC's Doc Block!

MSNBC won the 25-54 Prime Time figures too, with strong showings for the Doc Block, and a 2nd place for Countdown, which of recent times has languished in 3rd, usually just behind Nancy Grace.

Bill O'Reilly usually likes to brag that the second nightly airing of The O'Reilly Factor, gets more viewers than Countdown's first airing at 8pm, but not this time. Countdown at 8pm had 662,000 viewers whilst the 11pm repeat of the Factor only got 509,000.

Friday was strong for MSNBC and unusually weak for Fox News. Even CNN languished.
